TV show reviews: Moonlight
Blood-tini Anyone?
Never in a million years would I have thought that my husband and I would double check our T-VO to ensure it was programmed to record the television show, “Moonlight” if we were going to be out for the evening. You see, “Moonlight TV Show” has a unique storyline; it’s about a modern day vampire who is trying to find a way to become human again.
We stumbled upon, “Moonlight” purely by fault one evening and before my husband had the chance to continue his remote control relationship, I caught a glimpse of Mick, the vampire, at a crime scene having a dramatic flash back and next thing we knew the hour was up and we were hooked!
The continuing, main storyline revolves around two main characters, Mick and Beth. She is a driven, tabloid reporter with a serious live-in boyfriend to boot; foreshadowing of a love triangle. Well, girl meets boy, little does girl know that boy is hundreds of years old, and had saved her life long ago when she was a youngster; he has been keeping tabs on her ever since. The slow, realistic way that Mick and Beth’s relationship evolves makes the audience feel as if they too were getting to know them as well. The actors are believable in the roles that they are portraying. The roles appear to come naturally for the two actors and the on-screen compatibility seems genuine.
There is also Mick’s best friend and “mentor”, Josef. He is presented as an upper-class, very distinguished “vamp”, who only drinks fresh blood and is more than obliged to offer a “blood-tini” to his guests. The character of Josef is exceptionally acted out and inviting. These two together have well written lines to banter back and forth that add great humor to their shared scenes. They are a well-paired team and observing them acting against one another is enjoyable.
Now, over the course of the series, the audience slowly gains information about Mick’s past and how it ended up coinciding with Beth’s. This story line continues to stay fresh by careful not to divulge too much information at once therefore, the audience returns week after week due to their peeked curiosity. For instance, when circumstances cause Beth to discover Mick’s secret, it opened up a whole other avenue for story ideas and plot lines. When they began reruns following that episode we were anxiously waiting for the next set to start. Don’t even get me started on the writers’ strike; that was torture.
Humor, is one of the main reasons we enjoy the show so much; even the writers will include lines that ridicule society’s fascination with vampires. The way these subtle lines are presented not only brings out the talent of the actors delivering the lines, but the great writing.
An additional positive characteristic of, “Moonlight” is the way the writers creatively introduce the idea of vampires actually existing in modern day society. For instance, they feature a bright, geeky, college student, who looks normal to you and me, however, in reality is one of “them”. They occasionally use him to help in solving crimes via the internet. What the writers have done is pose the question; what would a vampire’s life be like in our modern day society and would you be able to pick them out of a crowd? What Mick has been searching for from the beginning of the series, is a way to become mortal again and now that he has fallen for Beth, he is more determined than ever.
The last thing the audience was left with in one of the last, new episodes was a very big question; If you had the chance to save someone you love dearly from dying by giving them “eternal” life as a vampire without their permission, would you?
