CBS Moonlight: The Fans Say Sonata is NOT Our Swan Song!
If this was any ordinary Friday I would be counting down the hours until Moonlight airs at 9pm EST with all of my online friends, but instead today we are all working in a never ending network of people to try to keep our show on the air - who’s air isn’t an issue to us.
I am like every other Moonlight fan out there: I was sucker punched Monday when the rumors began to buzz that Moonlight wasn’t going to be picked up for a second season. Say WHAT?!?!?! We the fans thought we had done everything right….we started our support of the show early in the season when we realized the freshman series might be impacted greatly by the writers strike. We began charity campaigns in the name of Moonlight including Toys For Tot drives, food drives, and blood drives - all before we even knew if we were “on the bubble”. The fans, despite knowing that the writers strike could negatively impact our show, backed the writers in their efforts to negotiate a fair and equitable contract for their hard work. The fans made weekly food deliveries to the picket lines, and even walked with the writers to show our support. When the strike was over we welcomed our wonderful creative team and cast back to the set with what can only be called an unbelievable amount of StarBuck’s gift cards so that they would have a constant supply of caffeine as they toiled those long days and nights getting our show back on the air.
We never stopped believing in them, and they never stopped believing in us. When the rumors began on Monday that despite everything, and despite the very promising words we had heard from Nina Tassler and Les Moonves just a short time before, the fate of Moonlight was looking bleak the fans were quite literally in shock. When the “official” announcement was made on Wednesday the shocked and saddened fans initially took a moment, just one, to vent their grief and anger - and then they went to work.
We learned alot from Jericho, and followed their lead on many things Moonlight related, but what we learned was to be proactive (which we were) and we also learned that begging for a second season on the same network might be an effort that even if sucessful could damage our beloved show. Instead the fans of Moonlight…..call us the Moonlight Mafia, the Moonlight Army, or just those crazy vampire lovers….mobilized behind Warner Brothers and Joel Silver. Our battle cry has not been “Please CBS give us another chance”, but “Mr. Silver, you have an army at your command.” Despite everything the fans of Moonlight have given to CBS, the loyalty we have shown to the sponsors, and their other network programming, we were cast aside because we supposedly did not make the ratings. The show consistently won it’s time slot, had a consistent and loyal following, and an army of people who were willing to give their time, money, and blood on free promotion for the show and CBS. The show has one of TV’s Sexiest Stars, they are a PCA winner, and likely one of the most loyal fan bases I have ever seen - and yet we find ourselves temporarily homeless.
It’s Friday night - Moonlight is on in 9 hours and 55 minutes as of this writing…..to CBS this is our swan song, and it’s time for us to take our bows and exit stage right gracefully. That might be the case if we were NOT Moonlight fans! CBS hear us ROAR! Tonight marks the end of Moonlight only in that it is the last of the 4 new episodes, but it is by no means over.
There are thousands of Moonlight fans from Alabama to Wyoming and across the world who will watch Sonata, but we will not hear the fat lady sing. There will be no graceful bow at the end as the house fades to black.
We will watch - from 9pm to 10pm, and not one second more. We will cry. We will mourn that our season is over, and that the people we have come to welcome into our lives each week are going through a pain that is tenfold what we are all feeling right now. There will be commiseration on the net as the reality sinks in that as of 10:01pm EST we are officially ‘homeless’.
Then we will dry our eyes, hug our friends, grab our coffee - and fight on.
Wanted: A home for two gorgeous vampires, one incredible leading lady, and an adorable basement dwelling computer genius vampire. New home must be big enough to accomodate 8 Million rabid, loyal fans and their spending dollars. If you think you have a home that can accomodate this awesome Moonlight family please contact Joel Silver and Warner Brothers for more information.
Sonata is not our swan song my friends - and the fat lady ain’t singing yet.
